The past two years have given me a lot to reflect on, I did not like how social media made me feel and how it made me act. Clickbait headlines would cause me concern, anger, or get me to post a reply or retweet with a caption that wasn’t helpful or useful or friendly or kind.
It certainly did not serve a greater purpose, so to help myself to stop feeling like this I went and deleted every follower or friend who posted crap like this or trolled people, this allowed me to curate a friendly experience, I personally hold back and don’t comment on anything unless I am contributing in a meaningful way.
It can be hard but if I stick at it my attitude will change and I won’t get caught up in all the divisive crap.
They don’t make it easy to quit
For a long time, I have had Facebook deleted from all my phones and tablets so that I wouldn’t go on it and doom scroll and I was going to delete the account completely however it turns out that a few work pages I am an admin on would get deleted so I have to get that sorted out first, and Facebook would also ditch any Oculus purchases I have made as well so ill need to figure out what they are and make a decision.
I am going to keep Instagram, I enjoy that platform and I do not waste time on it, I have changed what I post on it too, so now I only post meaningful quotes, update what books I read, and possibly some photos of food I cook, but I won’t put a lot of time and effort into food photos, no more light stands or dressing up a plate only to add a full portion after the photo.
Snapchat is boring to me, I barely use it the only thing I can think to keep it for is to access my Snapchat Glasses should I ever decide to wear them… I should sell them.
Twitter is great as I have said I unfollowed accounts that I took issue with, and on Twitter, I think I follow 12 people, some of them I have retweets turned off so I only get to see what they post as that’s all I’m interested in.
YouTube I unsubscribed from any content that didn’t align with my goals and values, so no more crash videos or brake check videos or any of that crap, it made me feel like crap and angry, to be honest. Now I follow cooking, motivation, finance, and anything else that brings me knowledge or meaning.
Reddit is pretty great so long as you don’t end up in a toxic group, but it’s been good so far!
So much free time!
I started to read books again! When I was listening to Rob Dial’s Podcast The Mindset Mentor he mentioned the book Man’s Search for Meaning. I hit pause and decided to look it up. Sounded fascinating, and I set out to read it. This truly is a magnificent book. It is definitely worth reading.
Then I went over to Goodreads to mark another book read and it prompted me to pick a goal for 2022 and I thought why not! So I set it to 12 books for the year thinking this would be a safe number. I wouldn’t easily fail and as I write this I have already read 8 books this year!
Now that winter is finally winding down it’ll be a great time to get back out there with the walking club get exercise and vitamin D. Love exploring new trails and paths our city has to offer!
This year we have been cooking at home way more! Not only great for our budgets especially with inflation but it’s a lot healthier and filling. I’ve been watching some new YouTubers a couple from Germany and a Middle Eastern channel, been browsing Whisk one of my favorite apps, and trying to find something new to cook at least once a week, my thinking is that if I try a new dish a week or bake something at the end of the year I’ve had 52 new experiences to look back on and grow from!
I love to listen to podcasts or audiobooks on the commute to work and on the way back, lots of free AudioBooks from the library!
Accomplishing goals! I saw this video clip on TikTok(probably going to get rid of it lol) and the guy spoke about creating a goal sheet, simply take a piece of paper and write down 10 goals you would like to accomplish this year. Look at that paper and find the one goal that would have the greatest impact on your life, get a new piece of paper and write down that goal and then break it down into every step you need to do to accomplish the goal, and once that’s done work on it every day little by little, and you will accomplish this goal!
I’ve been trying to meditate more, I find it difficult cause the brain won’t shut the hell up but I try and that’s all you can do, I have a muse headband which helps as it plays loud noises when you are distracted but as you gain clarity the noise goes away and if you really hit the zone you get birds chirping!
And of course journaling I don’t do much of it, I should do more, need to just write out as if I’m talking to a friend much like what I’m trying to do here on this blog post, Just talking to you like my friend.
